Several years ago, Hanna Peach received a vacant, dilapidated coffee shop as part of a divorce settlement. After a bit of sprucing up, she christened it "The Heartbreak Cafe'". Located on Melrose Boulevard, not far from the entertainment industry, it is populated by hopeful actors, singers, directors, producers, and others anxious to break into the "industry". Some succeed. Many don't. But, they all stop by The Heartbreak Cafe' to share their tales of woe and success.

The Heartbreak Cafe began in the spring of 1997 as the concept of Robert Michael Conrad to bring students a class that closely reflected a true Hollywood TV production. Starting with one cable station, the show grew into an established episodic cable TV show throughout southern California. The show used students as its acting and technical base and was considered a “light drama”.

Every aspect of TV production was incorporated into the show from acting, camerawork, sound, lighting, writing, directing, as well as pre and post-production.  The idea was to prepare the student for work as soon as they stepped out the door.

The Heartbreak Cafe also became a popular show for successful Hollywood actors to excercise their direting chops. Our guest directors interfaced directly with the student actors and crew to make the production a unique experience for all.

When The Heartbreak Cafe concluded in 2007, 67 episodes had been produced.

The producers have now branched out to include the production of short independent films.  Because of this, students can experience location filming as well as studio production. Updates of current productions can be found at

Over the years, we have encouraged working actors, and other “celebrities” from Hollywood to direct and star in episodes of “The Heartbreak Café”.  Our goal is to give them experience in directing a four-camera TV production without the pressure of a million dollar budget.  In exchange, the school, as well as the actor, is compensated with positive PR. The guest director and star receives no other compensation.  Click here to see a list of our guest directors.
